Findorff Accident Today – Construction Worker Injured After Lift Tips Over at Downtown Apartment Project, Prompting Emergency Response
A construction worker was injured Wednesday morning after a lift tipped over at a downtown construction site in Madison, prompting a major emergency response, temporary street closures, and a safety investigation into the incident.
According to the Madison Fire Department, emergency crews were dispatched to the intersection of Bassett Street and West Johnson Street around 10:47 a.m. following reports of a worker dangling from a building after scaffolding collapsed at an active apartment construction project.
The incident reportedly occurred at a construction site operated by Findorff, where workers were making adjustments to exterior scaffolding attached to the building. Officials said a telehandler — a large lifting machine commonly used on construction sites — was being used to reposition scaffolding when the equipment suddenly tipped over.
As the lift overturned, scaffolding connected to the machinery collapsed into the street below, creating a dangerous scene in the busy downtown area. Authorities said one worker who had been standing on the scaffolding managed to cling to the side of the building during the collapse but later fell an estimated 30 feet to the ground.
When firefighters from Engine 1 arrived, the injured worker was already receiving assistance from coworkers on the ground. Emergency medical personnel quickly evaluated the victim before transporting him to a nearby hospital. Officials stated the injuries were believed to be non-life-threatening, though no additional medical details have been released.
Emergency crews also responded to hazardous conditions created by leaking fuel and oil from the overturned telehandler. Firefighters worked to contain the spill while ensuring the site remained safe for responders and the public.
Bassett Street was temporarily closed as crews secured the area and stabilized the equipment. Authorities later confirmed that no additional injuries were reported.
Officials have not yet determined what caused the telehandler to tip over. Investigators and safety inspectors are expected to review equipment operation procedures, scaffolding setup, and site conditions as part of the ongoing investigation.
