Merritt Parkway Accident Today – Crashes on Merritt Parkway in Fairfield County Prompt Safety Concerns

A series of serious crashes along the Merritt Parkway has raised renewed concerns about roadway safety across parts of Fairfield County, following multiple recent incidents that included fatalities, injuries, and major traffic disruptions.

One of the most severe events occurred overnight in the Stamford and New Canaan area, where a fiery crash led to the closure of northbound lanes for several hours. According to the Connecticut State Police, a female passenger was killed after a vehicle struck a tree near Exit 13 and burst into flames. Emergency responders arrived quickly as the vehicle became engulfed, while traffic was halted and diversions were put in place.

During response efforts at the same location, a second collision involved a Connecticut State Police cruiser. Authorities reported that the patrol vehicle was struck by another driver, causing the cruiser to catch fire. Officials confirmed the trooper was outside the vehicle at the time of impact and was not injured.

The back-to-back incidents caused significant lane closures and extended delays through Stamford and surrounding communities as investigators processed the scenes and crews worked to remove wreckage from the roadway.

In addition to the overnight crashes, several other recent incidents have been reported along the Merritt Parkway corridor. In New Canaan, a rollover crash claimed the life of an 87-year-old Greenwich resident, while a separate two-vehicle collision in Norwalk resulted in injuries and heavy congestion near Exit 17C.

Transportation and safety officials note that recent crash patterns continue to show frequent incidents along high-traffic segments of the parkway, particularly near exits, merge points, and interchanges throughout Fairfield County.

Emergency crews have also responded to additional roadway incidents in recent days involving vehicles losing control and leaving the roadway, sometimes descending embankments along wooded sections of the parkway.

Drivers are being urged to exercise caution, reduce speed, and remain alert while traveling through the area, especially as investigators continue working at multiple crash sites. Motorists are also advised to check updates from the Connecticut Department of Transportation regarding lane closures, detours, and ongoing delays.

Investigations into the series of crashes remain active, with authorities expected to release further details as they become available.
