The Lanett community is mourning the tragic death of Tommy Boyd Jr., 51, who was fatally shot Tuesday night on North 10th Avenue in a case that remains under active investigation by local authorities.

According to the Lanett Police Department, officers and emergency medical personnel responded around 9:21 p.m. on May 12, 2026, after receiving reports of gunfire and a man lying in the roadway in the 600 block of North 10th Avenue.

When first responders arrived, they found Boyd suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the street. Emergency crews immediately began rendering medical aid at the scene, working desperately to save his life. Despite their efforts, Boyd succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Chambers County Coroner’s Office.

Following the shooting, the area was secured as investigators processed evidence, interviewed potential witnesses, and worked to reconstruct the events leading up to the deadly incident. Residents in the neighborhood reported a heavy police presence throughout the night as authorities continued gathering information.

Boyd’s body was later transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, where an autopsy is expected to be conducted as part of the ongoing investigation.
